Quake generated in same area as Oct. 15 temblor

Advertiser Staff

Today's Big Island earthquake occurred in virtually the same location as the serious Oct. 15 quake, according to preliminary data.

Today's quake was reported by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center at magnitude 4.5 and by the U.S. Geological Survey at 5.0, both much weaker than the 6.7 of the Oct. 15 event, which caused millions of dollars in damage from Hawai'i to O'ahu.

No tsunami was generated.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported today's earthquake location as off the coast of the northwestern shore of the Big Island, between Kawaihae and Kailua, Kona. The coordinates are almost identical.

Today's shaker was felt across the state, with a few reports as far away as north Kaua'i.

No damage has been reported.
