Farrington Highway accident leaves one dead, 3 injured

Advertiser Staff

A two-car accident on Farrington Highway has left one man dead and sent a family of three to The Queen's Medical Center, police said.

The accident occurred at 10:55 p.m. last night on Farrington Highway, about one-tenth of a mile east of Leihoku Street. Police said a 33-year-old Wai'anae man, traveling east in his black 1995 Ford Ranger pickup truck, crossed the double solid yellow line and caused a head-on collision with a blue 1995 Chevy Suburban, which was driven by a 45-year-old female from Wai'anae.

Upon impact, the pickup truck driver — who was not wearing his seat belt — was thrown from his vehicle. He was taken to the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Care Center in extremely critical condition where he was pronounced dead, said Bryan Cheplic, Emergency Medical Services spokesman.

It is the 85th traffic fatality on O'ahu this year, compared to 69 at the same time last year.

The family in the SUV, meanwhile, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center. The collision had forced the SUV, which was traveling west, off the mauka side of the road. The driver was listed in serious but stable condition, her 45-year-old passenger, riding in the front seat, was also listed in serious but stable condition. Both were wearing seat belts. The third passenger, a 16-year-old male, was laying down in the backseat when the SUV was struck and suffered minor injuries. He was not wearing his seatbelt.

It is not known if speed or alcohol contributed to the collision, police said.
