Maui beaches closed after shark sighting

Advertiser Staff

LAHAINA, Maui — Beaches from Lahaina Harbor to Hanakao'o Beach Park in Ka'anapali were closed this morning after an 18- to 20-foot tiger shark was spotted off Mala Wharf.

The shark was said to be feeding on a turtle carcass, said county Department of Parks and Recreation Aquatics Division Chief Marian Feenstra.

The beaches will remain closed until the shark leaves the area and has not been sighted for two hours, she said.
