Ehime Maru Memorial gets special visitors today

Advertiser Staff

The Japan Ground Self Defense Force 1st Infantry Regiment will visit and clean the Ehime Maru Memorial today at 9:30 a.m.

The Ehime Maru was a fishing training boat operated by a Japanese High School. It was conducting routine operations about nine miles off of O'ahu on Feb. 9, 2001 when the USS Greeneville, a nuclear submarine, collided with it during an emergency surface drill.

The Greeneville had 16 civilian guests aboard, including dignitaries, when it surfaced under the Ehime Maru and created an international incident.

Nine members of the Maru's 35-member crew died as the fishing vessel sank in 10 minutes.

The Ehime Maru Memorial is located at Kaka'ako Waterfront Park.
