Homeless feast at Chinatown park

Advertiser Staff

A record number of homeless people lined up at 1 p.m. today for the Kau Kau Wagon's Thanksgiving Weekend feast at Chinatown Gateway Park, which occurs every year on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving Day.

Organizers estimated that a crowd of more than 800 people lined up for the free turkey dinners with all the trimmings.

There were also clothes, toiletries and other accessory items free for the taking.

And, for the second year running the gathering was treated to live music by various performers.

Among the volunteer servers was Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona.

This year's event was the 20th annual feast, said Kau Kau Wagon founder Sharon Black, who said began the whole Gateway Park feeding tradition with two bags of sandwiches and two gallons of juice.
