Big Island jolted again this morning

Advertiser Staff

Yet another earthquake rattled portions of the Big Island this morning.

Chip McCreery, director of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said the latest quake, at 5:49 a.m. was assigned a preliminary magnitude of about 4.3.

The temblor was centered about four miles north of Waipio Bay on the northern coast of the Big Island.

The location was a bit unusual given the fact that the two substantial earthquakes Oct. 15, which were measured at 6.7 and 6.0 magnitude, and a myriad of after shocks that resulted in more than $200 million in damages took place on the other side of the island — off the Kona coastline, McCreery said.

The earthquake today was felt at various points around the Big Island, but there were no reports initially of it being felt on O'ahu.

This morning's quake was deemed too small to generate a tsunami, McCreery said.
