Warriors' late rally stuns Purdue, 42-35

Ian Sample scored on a 23-yard screen-and-juke play with 1:27 remaining to give the University of Hawai'i football team a pulsating 42-35 victory over Purdue Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.

Before 44,298, the largest home crowd of the season, the Warriors rallied from a 35-27 deficit in the fourth quarter to win their ninth in a row.

The score was tied at 35, when UH cornerback Gerard Lewis intercepted Curtis Painter's pass at the UH 46.

Five plays later, UH quarterback Colt Brennan threw a screen to Sample on the right side. Sample cut across the field and sprinted along the left sideline to the end zone.

The Warriors improved to 10-2. They finish the regular season with Senior Night against Oregon State this coming Saturday.

The Warriors tied the score at 35 when Brennan teamed on a 5-yard scoring pass to Ryan Grice-Mullins, and then the two collaborated on the two-point conversion with 4:48 to play.

Purdue took a 28-27 lead when Dustin Keller caught his second scoring pass of the second half, a 19-yarder from Painter with 7:29 remaining.

On UH's next possession, running back Nate Ilaoa fumbled at the end of a sweep. Purdue recovered at the UH 32 with 6:58 left.

The Warriors challenged the call, although television replays clearly showed Ilaoa had fumbled. The Warriors were charged a timeout.

On the next play — a play-action — Painter and Selwynn Lymon collaborated on a 32-yard touchdown to make it 35-27.

The Boilermakers, who had trailed 17-0 at the half, parlayed consecutive UH turnovers in the third quarter to launch their comeback.

Ilaoa rushed for two touchdowns and Daniel Kelly kicked a 22-yard field goal to give the Warriors a 17-0 lead at the half.

The Warriors entered the day with a slim chance of claiming a share of the Western Athletic Conference's regular-season title.

But that opportunity evaporated when 12th-ranked Boise State completed an unbeaten regular season with 38-7 rout of Nevada. The Broncos finished 12-0 and 8-0 in the WAC. The Warriors ended their WAC schedule last week with a 7-1 league record.

If the Warriors were disheartened, they did not show it, picking apart the Boilermakers' pass-prevent defense and playing consistent defense.

The Boilermakers did not score on any of their five first-half drives, and wasted a 7-minute, 3-second possession when they lost a fumble at the Warriors' 1.

The Warriors, meanwhile, were able to move against the Boilermakers, who abandoned their usual 4-3 defense. Instead, the Boilermakers, wary of the Warriors' four-wide passing attack, opened with three down linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs.

The scheme was largely ineffective against the Brennan-led Warriors.

On their opening drive, the Warriors drove 72 yards on 10 plays, the final 4 yards coming on Ilaoa's sprint around the left side.

The Warriors' next drive ended at the 10 when slotback Davone Bess dropped a pass on fourth-and-3 that would have resulted in a first down.

The Boilermakers, mixing inside runs and quick strikes to the flats, drove to the UH 3. A penalty advanced the ball to the 1.

From there, Painter tried to pitch to running back Kory Sheets. But the ball hit the blocking back and fell between the two players, and UH cornerback Myron Newberry recovered.

On the next play, Brennan fired to Bess at the end of a crossing route, a completion that netted 49 yards. Three plays later, from the 16, Ilaoa followed the block of guard John Estes, and ran around left end for the touchdown.
