UH-Hilo women lose opener

Danielle Dwello scored 25 points as Northwest Nazarene defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 100-38, yesterday in a women's basketball game at Nampa, Idaho.
The Crusaders (2-1) shot 54 percent from the field, making 41 of 76 attempts.
Sheila Azevedo had 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Vulcans in their season opener. The 5-foot-10 sophomore has not played competitively since 1999 when she starred at Waiakea High School.
"If we played like the last four minutes of the game, the match would have had a different outcome," said Hilo head coach Daphne Honma. "Hopefully, we worked out our first-game jitters."
FAIRBANKS BEATS CU
Sheena Brown had 15 points and nine rebounds as host Alaska Fairbanks beat Chaminade, 83-59, last night in an opening round women's game of the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational.
The Nanooks improved to 3-1.
Britnee Fonnesbeck scored 14 points, Simrin Cummins 13 and Samantha Saito 11 for the Silverswords (0-2), who play Cal Poly Pomona today.

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team was picked to finish in a tie for third in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, according to a preseason coaches' poll announced yesterday.
Defending regular-season champion UC Irvine was the top pick, followed by Brigham Young and then a three-way tie among UH, Pepperdine and UCLA in the 12-team league.
