LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The Waipahu Marauders didn't attempt many passes last night, and when they did Kaua'i Red Raiders defensive back Justyn Jumawan-Perreira was there to take them back to the end zone.

Jumawan-Perreira returned two interceptions for touchdowns as Kaua'i beat Waipahu, 17-6, in the semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division II State Football Championships at Vidinha Stadium.

"I guess the opposing team never know what Justyn Jumawan-Perreira is all about, so I took it to the house," he said.

Kaua'i (9-0) plays Maui's King Kekaulike for the title next Friday at 5 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.

"I like go right now. I stay excited already," said Jumawan-Perreira, a senior. "I never did play on that field and all my years I wanted to step on it, but I never did."

Jumawan-Perreira's first pick-six was from 20 yards out with 2:05 left before halftime. Kainoa Lemke's extra point made it 7-6 Kaua'i. On the play, Waipahu's Gil Fernandez attempted a play-action pass and Jumanwan-Perreira was there to pick off his high toss over the middle.

Jumawan-Perreira also scored on a 55-yard interception return with 10:42 left in the game, which made it 17-6.

"He should be the KIF player of the decade for Kaua'i High School," Waipahu coach Sean Saturnio said.

Waipahu, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion, attempted only six passes — one was caught, two were incomplete, two were returned for scores by Jumawan-Perreira and one was intercepted by linebacker Kevin Holtzman.

Jumawan-Perreira said the interception returns for touchdowns were his first of the season, but he had 15 interceptions in his first three seasons.

"As a junior and sophomore he did a tremendous job in this league with interceptions returned for touchdowns," said Kaua'i coach Keli'i Morgado, who added teams started throwing away from Jumawan-Perreira. "Waipahu gave him opportunities to make plays and he's a playmaker."

The Red Raiders' victory marked the first time a Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation team had beaten a team from O'ahu in the postseason.

"Growing up on O'ahu myself, you don't give a lot of credibility to the outer islands," said Morgado, a Punahou School alum. "I know these guys grow up here and there's an innate fear of Honolulu teams, and they conquered one of those fears."

The Red Raiders' defense allowed 111 yards on 39 carries. For the game, it allowed 127 yards.

Kaua'i, the KIF champion and No. 1 seed, gained momentum late in the first half with Jumawan-Perreira's first touchdown and a 36-yard field goal by Lemke with 6.6 seconds, which made it 10-6 Kaua'i at halftime.

In the first half, Kaua'i's lost two fumbles and threw an interception.

Matt Soueira scored on a 59-yard run that put Waipahu (8-3-2) ahead 6-0 in the first quarter.
