Rainbows play Oregon in NCAA opener at Long Beach

The 12th-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team will face Oregon at Long Beach, Calif., Friday in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship.

Host Long Beach State (25-5) plays No. 24 Pepperdine (16-11) in the other first-round match. The winners play Saturday for a spot in a regional hosted by UH Dec. 8 and 9 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

(UH will host the regional whether it is in it or not.)

The Rainbow Wahine (26-5) have won their past 13 matches and captured their ninth consecutive Western Athletic Conference championship on Friday.

Oregon (17-11) lost its final two regular season matches to No. 4 UCLA and No. 6 Southern California, which are also in the same NCAA bracket as UH.

No. 1 Nebraska received the top tournament seed, followed by Stanford, Penn State and UCLA.

New Mexico State (33-3) was the only other WAC team to make the 64-school field.

The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Omaha, Neb., on Dec. 14 and 16.
