Las Vegas rakes in stars, diamonds

By Anthony Curtis

Mobil Travel Guide has awarded two Las Vegas restaurants five stars: Alex, the big gun in the Wynn restaurant arsenal, and Joel Robuchon at the Mansion at MGM Grand. The AAA travel club's Five-Diamond hotel rating also went to the Wynn, along with MGM Grand's 51-suite Skylofts, The Ritz-Carlton at Lake Las Vegas, Bellagio and Four Seasons. In the restaurant category, Alex and Joel Robuchon made the list, along with Bellagio's Le Cirque and Picasso.

HUNDRED YEARS: Last month marked the 100th anniversary of the hotel that houses the Golden Gate. Though the building has had other names and owners, the GG has occupied the place since the '50s, which is ancient history in this town. One of the primary reasons for its longevity has been its 99-cent shrimp cocktail. Amazingly, in all the decades that the Gate has dished up the shrimp, the price has been raised only once — and not for the past 15 years.

BRING 'EM ALL: The Rampart Casino in west Las Vegas will accept any discount coupon for a Las Vegas buffet in December. Bring in a 2-for-1 from a freebie magazine or the newspaper and present it to the Rampart buffet cashier, and you can eat the good Rampart buffet for about $6 for dinner and $4 for lunch.
