Sand replenishment work under way at Waikiki beach

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is resuming its sand replenishment project at Waikiki's Kuhio Beach this morning.

The project had been delayed repeatedly by high surf. Although a high-surf warning is in place this morning, it is not expected to cause a further delay.

Setup work will take place through tomorrow. On Wednesday, the contractor will begin pumping 10,000 cubic yards of offshore marine sand onto the beach.

The project will close a small area of the beach for 20 to 30 days.
