Two H-1 lanes to close tonight, tomorrow in 'Aiea

Advertiser Staff

The two left lanes of the H-1 Freeway heading 'ewa-bound between 'Aiea and Pearl City will be shut down tonight and tomorrow as the Department of Transportation begins work on replacing the pedestrian overpass bridge that was damaged in September by a military flatbed truck.

The lanes will be shut down from 9 p.m. to 3:15 a.m. and then reopen to accommodate rush-hour traffic.

The two right lanes of the freeway in the 'ewa-bound direction will be closed Wednesday and Thursday night.

The biggest inconvenience for motorists will occur Sunday when all six 'ewa-bound lanes will be shut down from about 1:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. from the Halawa Interchange to the Waiau Interchange, also known as the H1-H2 merge.

That's when a contractor is expected to install an 80-foot, pre-cast section of concrete that will connect the walkway.

While DOT officials are expecting the work to go smoothly, motorists are being advised to add extra time to their commute if they plan to travel through the area during affected times.
