Former FBI clerk pleads guilty to felony charge

By KEN KOBAYASHI
Advertiser Courts Writer

A 35-year-old former clerk for the Federal Bureau of Investigation pleaded guilty this afternoon to a felony charge of getting information without authorization from the FBI computer at the office.

Charmaine Moniz told U.S. Magistrate Judge Kevin Chang she got the information to warn her husband to say away from some "people," but Assistant U.S. Attorney Florence Nakakuni said those warnings made drug dealers more cautious.

FBI suspicions about Moniz led to a massive two-year gambling and drug investigation that resulted in various federal charges against more than 35 people, including her husband Eric Moniz, five police officers, a Honolulu liquor commission inspector and the head of Aloha Stadium security.

Most of those defendants are awaiting trial.

Charmaine Moniz faces up to five years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine for her guilty plea to the charge.

Chang scheduled the sentencing for April 9.
