Spill snarls H-1 traffic near Vineyard off-ramp

Advertiser Staff

A minor fluid spill on the H-1 Freeway from a traffic accident snarled westbound traffic toward the end of the morning rush hour.

Drivers reported bumper-to-bumper traffic from the Kahala area to the Vineyard Boulevard off-ramp.

A Honolulu Fire Department official said firefighters were called to the Vineyard off-ramp to hose down automotive fluids such as coolant, motor oil, steering fluid or transmission fluid that fell onto the road surface following a traffic collision at about 7:55 a.m.

The situation was compounded by a series of stalled vehicles in the 'ewa-bound lanes following the collision. All 'ewa-bound lanes were reopened by about 9 a.m.

Meanwhile, the koko head-bound lanes of the freeway also became clogged at the same time due to a minor traffic collision inside the Middle Street merge tunnel, which was made worse by an earlier stalled vehicle at the Pali Highway off-ramp.
