H-1 lanes to close tonight for 'Aiea overpass work

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Transportation has issued a reminder that the two right-most lanes of the H-1 Freeway in the 'ewa-bound direction near the damaged pedestrian overpass in 'Aiea will be closed tonight and Thursday night from 9 p.m. to 3:15 a.m. while work continues on a project to repair the damaged overpass.

In addition, all 'ewa-bound lanes of the freeway will be closed Sunday morning, from 1:30 to 5 a.m., from Halawa Interchange to Waiau Interchange, to allow contractor Hawaiian Dredging to lift a new, precast section of walkway into place.

During the Sunday morning closure, Honolulu-bound lanes of the freeway in "Aiea may be closed for short periods of time as a safety measure. Electronic message signs will be posted in Honolulu-bound lanes to inform drivers on the H-1 if they need to make a detour.

Half of the pedestrian overpass was damaged and later demolished on Sept. 6 after a backhoe being carried on a U.S. Army trailer slammed into the overpass rendering it structurally unsound.
