Maui police shoot man wielding speargun and air rifle

LAHAINA, Maui — A Maui police officer last night shot and killed a 54-year-old Lahaina man who reportedly was armed with a speargun and an air rifle, Maui police said today.

The man's daughter called 911 at 10:26 p.m. to report that her father was suicidal and had threatened her and his wife with a knife at their Leoleo Street home.

She said she had gotten the knife away from him but then he shot himself in the chest with a nail gun, said Lt. Glenn Cuomo of the Maui Police Department.

When four patrol officers arrived at 10:32 p.m., the wife was outside the home and the daughter had locked herself inside a bedroom. Police entered the home and the man approached officers with a speargun and air rifle, Cuomo said.

When he ignored several orders to stop, one of the officers fired two shots into the man, who took a couple more steps before collapsing, he said.

An autopsy is scheduled for today. Police did not release the man's name or the name of the officer involved in the shooting, or further details.
