High surf delaying sand replenishment

Advertiser Staff

Surfers at Waikiki may be enjoying the out-of-season southern swell, but it's not doing much for the city's sand replenishment plan.

The Waikiki beach nourishment project has been put on hold until the head-high south swell dissipates, city officials said yesterday.

The barge and pipeline were deployed Monday and are currently anchored offshore awaiting the surf to dissipate so the pipeline can be assembled and installed.

The surf is expected to decline tomorrow. Assembly and installation of the pipeline is expected to take a full day before the pumping can begin.
