1932: The Advertiser reports that active steps are being taken to form a Better Business Bureau in Honolulu.
1940: Roman Catholic officials announce that the first Hawai'i diocese will soon be established.
1959: The fountain of the Kilauea eruption reaches 1,700 feet before the outpouring flames out.
1968: Fort Street Mall opens.
1975: A Big Island earthquake sets up a natural chain reaction that included a moderate, locally generated tsunami and a volcanic eruption in the Kilauea caldera. Two people were killed in the tsunami. No part of the Big island was spared by the disaster. Hilo suffered extensive damage in the downtown district. Boats and homes were damaged in Keauhou. Ka'u lost its only tourist facility. There was a path of devastation through Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, and Halape Beach sank beneath the waves.
1986: Buck Buchwach becomes editor of The Advertiser, succeeding George Chaplin.
