LAHAINA, Maui — A 54-year-old Lahaina man reportedly threatened police officers with a spear gun and an air rifle before an officer fatally shot him Tuesday night at his home.

Romeo Butihi died after being shot twice by a patrol officer who had responded to a 911 call from the man's adult daughter.

The woman called for help at 10:26 p.m., saying that Butihi had threatened her and his wife with a knife at their home at 141 Leoleo St. in a working-class neighborhood adjacent to the West Maui Recreation Center, said Lt. Glenn Cuomo of the Maui Police Department. The daughter told police she had gotten the knife away from him but that he then shot himself in the chest with a nail gun, Cuomo said.

The woman reported that Butihi was suicidal and had told her he would kill any police officers who came to the house, Cuomo said.

Four patrol officers arrived at 10:32 p.m. They led Butihi's wife to safety outside the home while the daughter had locked herself inside a bedroom. Police entered the home, and Butihi approached the officers with a spear gun and air rifle that resembled a real firearm, Cuomo said. When Butihi ignored several orders to drop the weapons, one of the officers fired two shots at the man, who took a couple more steps before collapsing.

An autopsy was performed yesterday; results were not released.

Police did not release the name of the officer involved in the shooting. The 10-year Maui Police Department veteran was placed on paid administrative leave.

Police indicated they were not immediately aware of any previous calls for assistance at the house. In 1981, Butihi stabbed his now-former wife 13 times with a pocket knife at their Kihei home, according to court records. He was sentenced to a year in jail, five years of probation and a $5,000 fine.
