Washington man dies in fall at hotel

A 32-year-old man fell to his death early yesterday morning from the 24th floor of the Ala Moana Hotel.

The city Department of the Medical Examiner identified the man as Jeremy Peterson of Snohomish, Wash.

Police believe Peterson slipped shortly after midnight while attempting to climb from a 24th-floor fire escape stairwell to the lanai of his apartment on the same floor.

Police said the man's acquaintances told them the man had been drinking at a bar across the street and appeared to be intoxicated when he reportedly tried to climb onto the lanai and slipped. He was pronounced dead at 12:51 a.m. There were no apparent signs of foul play, police said.

RESIDENTS URGED TO GET FLU SHOT

The state Health Department is reminding Hawai'i residents to get their flu shots.

The week of Nov. 27 to Dec. 3 is National Influenza Vaccination Week.

Health Director Chiyome Fukino said that while health professionals recommend people get their shots in October and November, flu occurs in Hawai'i year-round.

SUSPECT HELD AFTER MAN HIT BY CAR

A 30-year-old man was arrested for questioning yesterday about an mid-morning incident in which another man was struck by a car during a heated argument in Makaha.

Police are investigating the case as an attempted murder. The incident occurred at 9:50 a.m.

A 33-year-old man, hit by the car, suffered unspecified injuries. The man arrested is a former boyfriend of the injured man's girlfriend, police said.

OFFICER HIT WHILE BREAKING UP FIGHT

A police officer trying to break up an early morning argument between two men on a street in 'Ewa Beach was allegedly punched in the face twice by one of the men.

A 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer in the 4:30 a.m. incident.




KALIHI

MAN, 24, ARRESTED WITH STOLEN CHECK

Police on Tuesday arrested a 24-year-old man after he allegedly tried to cash a stolen check at a Kalihi bank.

Police believe the check in question belonged to a 49-year-old man and was stolen during a burglary. The man who tried to cash the check was arrested about 7:55 a.m.

DEPOSIT TURNS OUT TO BE STOLEN CHECK

Police arrested a 22-year-old Waimanalo man Tuesday after he allegedly deposited a check in his checking account that had been stolen from his employer earlier this month.

Police were told the man deposited the check into his account at a credit union on Nov. 14. The bank the check was drawn on returned it unpaid to the credit union, which froze his accounts, police said.

When the man who deposited the check went to the credit union Tuesday to ask why the accounts had been frozen, he was arrested on suspicion of second-degree forgery.

Kailua High School's Project Graduation 2007 committee is holding a HI-5¢ can and bottle drive 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the school's parking lot. The group will accept donations of redeemable aluminum cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles.
