EAST LANSING, Mich. — Ron Zook and Illinois finally have a Big Ten victory to celebrate. For John L. Smith and Michigan State, the misery continues.

A week after blowing a 16-point, fourth-quarter lead to Notre Dame, the Spartans became the first Big Ten team to lose to the Illini since 2004. Jason Reda's 39-yard field goal with 6 seconds remaining lifted Illinois to the 23-20 victory yesterday.

The Illini were 26-point underdogs.

"I want them to understand that feeling and get hungry for that feeling and know that we've got to work harder to get some more wins," said Zook, in his second season as Illinois coach.

The homecoming crowd often booed Smith and his players.

"We didn't get the kids prepared to play the game," Smith said. "And if you go out unprepared emotionally and mentally, you're going to lose and you deserve to lose."

The celebration for the Illini (2-3, 1-1) got a little testy, when they rushed to midfield to plant their school flag in the Spartan Stadium turf. Players from both sides briefly traded pushes and shoves before heading to their respective locker rooms.

Zook apologized for the midfield incident after the game.

The loss was the second straight for Michigan State (3-2, 0-1), its first to Illinois in 10 games and certainly no way to get over the sting of last week's 40-37 collapse against the Fighting Irish.

Illini freshman quarterback Isiah "Juice" Williams ran for 103 yards on 17 carries. He also completed nine of 16 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown, with one interception.

Michigan State kicker Brett Swenson connected on a 27-yard field goal with 2:46 left to tie the score at 20.

Williams then engineered a 10-play, 58-yard drive to give Reda a shot at the game-winning kick. The key play: an 8-yard pass to Kyle Hudson, moving Reda into better range.

Illinois had lost 24 of its last 25 conference games entering yesterday, and gone 5-28 in Big Ten games since winning the conference title in 2001.

MIAMI 14, HOUSTON 13

MIAMI — Javarris James set a record for Miami freshmen by rushing for 148 yards, and the Hurricanes beat previously unbeaten Houston (4-1).

James, who eclipsed Clinton Portis' mark of 147 yards set against East Carolina in 1999, had a 1-yard touchdown run for the Hurricanes (2-2).

James Bryant caught a 2-yard scoring pass with 1:24 left in the third quarter for Miami, which avoided what would have been the program's third 1-3 start in 30 years.

TEXAS TECH 31, TEXAS A&M 27

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Graham Harrell threw three touchdown passes to Robert Johnson, including the game-winner with 26 seconds left, and Texas Tech (4-1, 1-0 Big 12) beat Texas A&M (4-1, 0-1).

Harrell completed 32 of 45 for 392 yards, shredding A&M's sixth-ranked pass defense most of the game.

Tech trailed 27-24 when Johnson outleaped A&M cornerback Jordan Peterson to make an acrobatic catch in the front corner of the end zone.

WASHINGTON 21, ARIZONA 10

TUCSON, Ariz. — Isaiah Stanback threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns to lead Washington (4-1, 2-0) to its third straight victory.

Washington scored three times in the final 6:07 of the first half to take a 21-3 lead and held Arizona (2-3, 0-2) to minus-7 yards rushing.

Stanback, who was 14 of 25 passing, connected on 11 straight throws after missing his first four.

UCLA 31, STANFORD 0

PASADENA, Calif. — Freshman Chane Moline scored twice on short runs in the second half and UCLA (3-1, 1-1 Pac-10) pulled away for a victory over Stanford (0-5, 0-3).

Led by cornerbacks Trey Brown and Rodney Van, the Bruins' defense caused five turnovers. The shutout was UCLA's first since 2004, when it blanked Stanford, 21-0.

The Bruins led just 7-0 at halftime, but took control with 17 points in the fourth quarter.

PENN STATE 33, NORTHWESTERN 7

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — In a matchup of the oldest and youngest coaches in Division I-A, Joe Paterno, 79, and Penn State (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) defeated Pat Fitzgerald, 31, and Northwestern (2-3, 0-1).

Deon Butler set a Penn State record with 216 yards receiving and Tony Hunt ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns.

The Lions outgained the Wildcats 329-127 by halftime, but led just 16-7.

NAVY 41, CONNECTICUT 17

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Navy quarterback Brian Hampton ran for 182 yards and three touchdowns, and threw for 141 yards and another score as the Midshipmen routed Connecticut (2-2).

Reggie Campbell ran for 101 yards on just five attempts, and scored on the Midshipmen's first offensive play of each half.

Navy (4-1) racked up 605 yards with its triple-option offense.

SYRACUSE 40, WYOMING 34

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Delone Carter scored his fourth touchdown on a 15-yard run in the second overtime to give Syracuse (3-2) a victory over Wyoming (1-4).

Wyoming's Karsten Sween hit Hoost Marsh with a 15-yard TD pass on a slant over the middle with 5 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

WISCONSIN 52, INDIANA 17

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — John Stocco threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns, and P.J. Hill ran for 129 yards and three scores as Wisconsin (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) routed Indiana (2-3, 0-1).

The Badgers responded emphatically after last week's loss at Michigan with 390 yards and five TDs in seven first-half possessions. They finished with 539 total yards.

AIR FORCE 24, NEW MEXICO 7

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — Ryan Williams ran for 94 yards and a touchdown and Air Force (2-1, 2-0 Mountain West) turned two takeaways into TDs in a victory over New Mexico (2-3, 0-1).

The Falcons gained 262 yards on the ground and limited the Lobos to 52 yards rushing.
