BYUH volleyball's Navalta wins 500th

Noelle Filimoeatu had 14 kills and 17 digs as No. 9 Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept Grand Canyon, 30-27, 30-19, 30-24, last night in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at Phoenix.

Michelle "Tuli" Peters added 13 kills and nine digs for the Seasiders, who improved to 11-0 overall and 7-0 in the PacWest in handing Wilfred Navalta his 500th career coaching victory. Navalta has a 500-96 record in 22 seasons.

Roseanne Vea contributed 11 digs and Faylynn Merrick had five solo blocks for BYUH.

Tonya Rooth had nine kills and Ashley Handley added 20 digs for Grand Canyon (7-10, 3-5).

CHAMINADE SWEEPS

Evelyn Bluthenthal had 12 kills and 18 digs as Chaminade beat Hawaii-Hilo, 30-18, 30-28, 30-22, last night in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at Hilo civic.

Vanja Radanovic and Brittnee Fonnesbeck each had 11 kills and Trina Kauliakamoa 10 for the Silverswords (12-3 overall, 7-1 PacWest).

Morgan Bonney led Hilo (5-11, 3-4) with 14 kills.


SURFING

IRONS PLACES THIRD

Kaua'i's Andy Irons tied for third place in the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday, and remained No. 3 on the world rankings.

The final day of the event was completed in 4- to 6-foot waves at Hossegor, France.

Irons won his fourth-round and quarterfinal heats, but was then eliminated in the semifinals by Australia's Joel Parkinson.

Parkinson won the contest and the $30,000 first-place check by defeating fellow Australian Mick Fanning in the final.

Hawai'i surfers Roy Powers and Fred Patacchia Jr. were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Florida's Kelly Slater was also eliminated in the semifinals, but increased his lead in the World Championship Tour ratings.

Through eight of 11 events, Slater is ranked No. 1 with 7,017 points. Taj Burrow of Australia is No. 2 with 5,968, and Irons is No. 3 with 5,841.

Among other Hawai'i surfers, Bruce Irons is No. 15, Patacchia is No. 20, Pancho Sullivan is No. 25, and Powers is No. 37.


TENNIS

SEASIDERS DOMINATE

Julia Ustyuzhanina defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i teammate Ramona Husaro, 6-3, 6-2, yesterday in the singles final of the Women's Division II Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Western Regionals at La Jolla, Calif.

The top-seeded Ustyuzhanina reached the final by beating Cal Poly Pomona's Jenny Tsai, 6-1, 6-0, earlier in the day.

Ustyuzhanina and Husaro teamed to win the doubles title with an 8-0 victory over UC San Diego's Allison Legakis and Christy Knudsen. Ustyuzhanina and Husaro, the top-seeded team, lost only one doubles point in their three matches.

UH MEN FALL

University of Hawai'i senior Matt Seeberger won his first-round match, but was beaten in the second round yesterday at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American pre-qualifying tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

Seeberger beat Georgia State's Mattias Skold, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2, before losing to Texas' Rook Schellenberg, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

UH senior Derrick Lajola lost his first-round match to Iowa's J.P. Ritchie, 6-2, 6-3.

UH sophomore Sascha Heinemann and freshman Andreas Weber earned entry into the qualifying round beginning tomorrow.

The tournament is one of three majors in collegiate men's tennis.

UH WOMAN OUSTED

LSU's Megan Falcon ousted University of Hawai'i senior Sabita Walkup, 6-3, 6-0, yesterday at the Rivera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American pre-qualifying tournament in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

The tournament is one of three majors in collegiate women's tennis.

BYUH SWEEPS CU

Heidi Bushman, Jill Haar and Kaitlin Johnson scored as Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Chaminade, 3-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's match at La'ie.

Bushman also had an assist for BYUH (5-1 overall, 2-0 PacWest). Chaminade is 0-4, 0-2.

Also, Aaron Nonnenmacher and Nicholas Vicchrilli scored as the BYUH men beat Chaminade, 3-0.

BYUH (3-2, 2-0) also got an own goal. Chaminade is 0-5, 0-2.

UHH, HPU TIE

Hawai'i-Hilo and Hawai'i Pacific battled to a 1-1 tie yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's match at Keaau High stadium.

Gene Okamura scored for Hilo (3-3-1 overall, 0-1-1 PacWest), while Akihide Adachi scored for HPU (3-2-1, 1-0-1).

Earlier, Nikki Arevalo scored two goals as HPU rallied to beat Hilo, 3-1, in a women's match.

Jamie Hirai also scored for HPU (2-3, 1-1), while Kelly White scored for Hilo (3-4, 1-1).

CROSS COUNTRY



UH FINISHES 11TH

The University of Hawai'i women's cross country team placed 11th in the 22-team Charles Bowles Invitational yesterday at Salem, Ore.

Junior Chantelle Laan was the fastest Rainbow Wahine, placing 28th with a time of 18 minutes, 22 seconds in the 5-kilometer race.

Idaho's Dee Olsen, the reigning Western Athletic Conference champion who ran unattached, won in 17:01.

Oregon State took the team title with a low-best 40 points. UH scored 306.

UHH PLACES SEVENTH

The Hawai'i-Hilo women's team placed seventh in the 10-team Stanford Invitational yesterday in Stanford, Calif.

Kari Andrews was Hilo's top finisher, placing 40th in the 4-kilometer race in 16 minutes, 7 seconds. Jennifer Toomey, running unattached, won in 14:02.

Stanford won with a low-best 33 points. Hilo had 209.

In the non-scoring team format, Hilo's Germain Ortiz placed 79th in the 8-kilometer race in 25:27. Stanford's Neftalem Araia won in 23:31.
