Kukui Gardens tenants sue to stop sale of apartments

By Rick Daysog
Advertiser Staff Writer

Tenants at the Kukui Gardens affordable rental complex filed suit in Honolulu federal court today against the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The tenants are asking that a federal judge bar HUD from approving owner Kukui Gardens Corp.'s plan to prepay a $16.1 million, federally insured loan. The prepayment would allow the owner to sell the 857-unit affordable rental project near Chinatown to San Francisco-based Carmel Partners Inc. for about $130 million.

The tenants say the sale would lead to the displacement of hundreds of low-income and elderly tenants.
