Woman, 27, hurt in one-car crash

A 27-year-old woman was in serious condition following what appeared to be a one-car accident on Luna'ai Street in Kailua early yesterday.
The woman was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, city emergency services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said. She was later upgraded to serious condition.
Her car apparently hit a utility pole and flipped over. The accident occurred at the cross streets of Luna'ai Street and Auloa Road at about 1:15 a.m.

CITY GIVING GRANTS TO AID COMMUNITY
The city Department of Community Services is accepting applications for grants to address homelessness, substance abuse and poverty on the Leeward Coast. The grants range from $25,000 to $100,000 and will go to private and nonprofit organizations.
The grants also can go toward rehabilitating public or community facilities.
The deadline to apply is Oct. 27. Awards will be made on Dec. 15. Applications are available at www.honolulu.gov/dcs/spro jects.htm and at the Department of Community Services offices at Kapolei Hale and the O'ahu Work Links Wai'anae office at 85-670 Farrington Highway.

SHARK SIGHTING CLOSES BEACH PARK
Kaua'i Ocean Safety Bureau officials yesterday closed Ha'ena Beach Park near Tunnels Beach because of a shark sighting in the area. The beach was expected to reopen today.
The shark sighting was in the same area where teenage surfer Bethany Hamilton lost her left arm in a shark attack in 2003.

GO-KARTER HURT ON KOMO MAI DRIVE
A man was critically injured last night when his go-kart collided with a car in Pacific Palisades. The 8:20 p.m. accident was on Komo Mai Drive near Apo'epo'e Street. City Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said the man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

MAN INJURED WHILE PARAGLIDING
A 44-year-old man fell 35 feet in a paraglider accident yesterday at Makapu'u, near Sea Life Park. He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center with critical injuries but was later listed in serious condition, said city Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.
The accident was at 3:15 p.m.

DJOU TO CHAIR THIELEN CAMPAIGN
State Rep. Cynthia Thielen, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, has selected Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou as her campaign chairman.
Djou represents Waikiki to Hawai'i Kai on the City Council. He served as vice chairman of the state Republican Party. He also served in the state House as minority floor leader.
The Republican Party picked Thielen to replace Jerry Coffee, who dropped out of the U.S. Senate race due to health problems, after he won the Republican primary on Sept. 23.
Correction: A man was injured in a paragliding accident Sunday at Makapu'u. A previous version of a brief incorrectly described it as a hang-gliding accident.
