1915: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that the first Mormon temple ever to be erected outside North America will soon be built in La'ie.

2001: Beloved Hawaiian entertainer and composer Irmgard Farden Aluli dies at the age of 89. She wrote more than 300 tunes.

2002: J.C. Penney Co. announces it is closing three of its four Hawai'i department stores effective Jan. 10, 2003.
