BYUH stays unbeaten in volleyball

The eighth-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's volleyball team swept through Notre Dame de Namur, 30-22, 30-12, 30-20, in 1 hour, 20 minutes last night for a Pacific West Conference volleyball victory at Belmont, Calif.

Junior outside hitter Michelle "Tuli" Peters had 14 kills and 16 digs as the Seasiders improved to 12-0 overall and 8-0 in the PacWest.

Noelle Filimoeatu added nine kills and 13 digs, Christina Bobik had eight kills and three blocks, and Faylynn Merrick contributed eight kills for BYUH.

Emily Evans led the Argonauts (7-15, 0-7) with eight kills.

The Seasiders moved up a notch to No. 8 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II national rankings released Monday.

BYUH bumped Washburn (Kansas), which lost last week, from the eighth spot.

The Seasiders are one of three unbeaten teams in NCAA II.

UH REMAINS NO. 15

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team remained at No. 15 in the latest College Sports Television/American Volleyball Coaches Association poll announced Monday.

Nebraska (13-0) remained number No. 1 while Western Athletic Conference member New Mexico State dropped out of the poll in voting by the coaches.

YOKOMOTO OUSTS LEE

Beau Yokomoto eliminated fellow Pearl Country Club pro and defending champion Regan Lee, 1-up, yesterday in the first round of the Turtle Bay Golf Match Play Championship at Turtle Bay's Arnold Palmer Course.

Yokomoto was scheduled to meet Mark Morrison in the quarterfinals. Morrison beat Jason Diegert, 3 and 2.

Defending senior division champion Dugal Milne won his quarterfinal match — defeating Dave Kowalczyk, 2 and 1.

The tournament is the Aloha Section PGA's fifth major championship of the season.


SOCCER

UH WOMEN FALL, 2-0

The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team dropped its second straight road game, falling to Loyola Marymount, 2-0, yesterday in Los Angeles.

Lauren Shanklin and Jamie Bell scored second-half goals within 65 seconds of each other for the Lions, who improved to 7-1-2. Hawai'i dropped to 6-5-2 after losing its third straight.

Rainbow Wahine sophomore midfielder Kelli-Anne Chang had a team-high four shots, three on goal.

Hawai'i remains on the road, opening its Western Athletic Conference season against Idaho Friday and Boise State Sunday.

BYUH MEN PREVAIL, 3-1

Kamuela Kamoe and Michael Akinaka each had a goal and an assist as the Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's soccer team beat host Embry-Riddle, 3-1, last night at Prescott, Ariz.

Stephen Blake scored the only goal of the first half for the Seasiders (4-2).

Felipe Ferreira scored in the 80th minute for Embry-Riddle (6-8-1).


BOXING

PENOVAROFF 2-0 AS PRO

Hawai'i's Van Oscar Penovaroff knocked out Michigan's Mike Krull in the first round of their pro bout last weekend at the Mohican Northstar Casino in Bowler, Wis.

Penovaroff, who is from Kailua, Kona, caught Krull with a combination and sent him to the canvas. The referee stopped it 1 minute, 27 seconds into the fight.

Penovaroff, who weighed 140 pounds, improved to 2-0.
