Gammie captures Farr title

Advertiser Staff

Dale Gammie became the first Rainbow Wahine in 20 years to win an intercollegiate golf tournament when she captured the Heather Farr Memorial yesterday at Omni Interlocken Resort in Broomfield, Colo.

The University of Hawai'i senior closed with an even-par 72 in extremely windy conditions. Her 54-hole total of 2-under 214 made her the only golfer under par for the tournament, which was won by Denver. Hawai'i finished fourth, 10 shots back at 910.

Before yesterday, former UH coach Bobbi Kokx was the only Rainbow Wahine to win a tournament — the inaugural Donnis Thompson Invitational in 1986.

Gammie, a 2003 St. Anthony's graduate from Pukalani, Maui, is a three-time all-WAC performer, earning first-team honors the past two seasons.

After shooting 71 the first two rounds, Gammie started the final day with a two-shot lead. In the shotgun format, Gammie started at No. 4, then double-bogeyed fifth, played the next 13 in even par, then birdied Nos. 17 and 18 to extend her lead to five — her final margin of victory over Denver's Emily Hoeper.

Gammie had four previous top-five finishes. She lost a playoff in the Bay Area Classic her sophomore year.

UH freshman Corie Hou (77-78-77—232) tied for 27th. Senior Xyra Suyetsugu (75-75-83—233) was 31st, followed by Nancy Shon (83-77-77—237) in 44th and Carolina Perez (83-77-78—238) at 48th.
