Fire destroys Liliha home, damages four others

Advertiser Staff

A fire early this morning destroyed an older, one-story wooden home in Liliha and damaged four others, fire officials said.

A man and a woman were in the house at the time the fire broke out along with a 2-year-old toddler, said Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada. All of them managed to escape without injury.

The structure was fully involved by the time fire crews got there," Tejada said.

The alarm was received at 2:33 a.m. And the first crews were on the scene three minutes later. The fire was declared under control at 3:04 a.m., Tejada said.

The address for the home that burned is 1908-A Liliha Street. The home is located on a narrow lane that exits onto Liliha Street, Tejada said.

Because the older homes in the area are relatively close together, four adjacent houses were damaged by heat generated by the house that was destroyed, Tejada said.

Heat built up in the attack of one of the surrounding homes causing a fire to ignite, Tejada said.

"The firefighters had to pull down about two-thirds of the ceiling to get at the fire," Tejada said.

He said Red Cross workers were at the scene to help people displaced by the fire.
