The Oct. 5, 1916, Pacific Commercial Advertiser quoted a land dealer, who said there was great interest among Mainland hotel companies in Waikiki land, including Ainahau, the former home of Princess Ka'iulani. Ainahau is now the site of the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Hotel.

1911: Formal steps are taken to establish a permanent scientific observatory at Kilauea.

1985: Honolulu voters oust three veteran city councilmen after they switched political parties. The recall election drew a turnout of 62 percent of voters in the three council districts. George Akahane, Rudy Pacarro and Toraki Matsumoto all had been elected as Democrats, but joined the Republican Party in mid-term, following in the footsteps of Mayor Frank Fasi.

2005: Fifteen-year-old golfer Michelle Wie turns pro.
