Reporters query candidates

Advertiser Staff

One reporter asked the candidates how the state can get tougher on crime without more prison space.

Iwase said he would build another prison, and that Lingle has surrendered to the NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) mentality.

Lingle asked where would Iwase build a prison. Name the place, she said.

A reporter asked Iwase what he did as state senator that would make him a better governor.

Iwase cited tax cut legislation he supported, relief for Hurricane Iniki survivors and creation of central Oahu regional park. He also cited his support to build a UH West Oahu campus.

Lingle said her experience as Maui mayor and governor make her more qualified. She said she has turned the state economy around. She also said Iwase has never been an elected executive.
