Lingle, Iwase challenge each other on issues

Advertiser Staff

In the second half of the debate, the candidates are allowed to ask each other questions, and reporters will pose follow-ups.

In the first exchange, Iwase asked Lingle if she thought going to war in Iraq was good policy. He asked her if she will admit that going to war was a mistake, and will she call President Bush on the phone and ask for an exit policy?

In response, Lingle said war is a terrible thing, but the majority of our elected leaders thought it was right thing to do.

An artificial timetable for withdrawal would poorly serve the troops overseas. And send wrong signal to terrorists, she said.

Iawase responded that it's still a mistake, so why won't Lingle call Bush and ask that no more troops from Hawaii be sent to the war?

Lingle responded that an artificial timetable is something she would never support.
