Court appointments, public schools debated

A reporter asked what the candidtaes are looking for in appointees to courts, especially appelate courts.

Lingel said she wants judges who interpret, study and apply law, not who try to create new law.

Iwase said he wants honesty of thinking, integrity of character, heart and the courage to make tough decisions.

A reporter asked about Iwase's support by public school teachers, but pointed out that he sent two of his sons to private schools.

Iwase says two of his sons wanted to go to Iolani, but his youngest son went to Mililani High.

He said public schools can compete favorably with private schools, and that family support and motivation are key factors.

Lingle says it's parents' decision and that it is a personal decision.

She said state is spending more than $2 billion on schools but money isn't reaching classroom level as it should and people aren't being held accountable.
