1886: The Rev. Lorenzo Lyons dies in Waimea, Hawai'i. His coffin was draped with a Hawaiian flag sent to him by King Kalakaua. Lyons was fluent in Hawaiian and The Advertiser noted that it was Lyons' custom, up to his last illness, to translate one hymn a week. He also composed hymns, incuding the beloved "Hawai'i Aloha."

1916: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports on a speech to the Rotary Club here by W.D. Adams, president of the Bergstrom Music Company. He told the business leaders that "the Hawaiian Islands have received more first-class advertising through Hawaiian music than from any organized effort at promotion we have ever made."

1962: Astronaut Walter Schirra arrives at Hickam Air Force Base, the first public appearance for the 39-year-old astronaut since he orbited Earth six times and brought his Sigma 7 spacecraft to a safe parachute landing in the Pacific Ocean.

2005: The Advertiser reports that the late singer-songwriter Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's 1993 album "Facing Future" has become the first Hawaiian music album to sell a million copies in the United States, reaching platinum status.
