1901: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that although the U.S. Department of Agriculture ruled that Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole could keep the pets he imported from Australia the importation of animals and birds is likely to be discouraged, particularly California linnets, English sparrows, rabbits and other rodents.
1908: Capt. William Matson announces he will place an order for a new 125-passenger steamship with a cargo capacity of 6,000 tons capable of making the run between San Francisco and Honolulu in six days.
1917: The Rev. Henry H. Parker, pastor of Kawaiaha'o Church for 54 years, announces his retirement, effective at the end of the year.
1935: Five U.S. congressmen visit Hawai'i for hearings on statehood
1953: Vice President Richard Nixon arrives in Hawai'i on the first leg of a 38,000-mile tour of 18 countries.
1957: Racial rioting breaks out at Hickam Air Force Base when tension between white and black airmen erupts into a fight involving about 80 people. Two airmen are seriously injured.
2001: U.S. and British forces launch air strikes at terrorist training camps and military targets throughout Afghanistan, opening what President Bush pledged would be a sustained campaign against those responsible for the 9/11 attacks.
