Woman killed in head-on collision in Wahiawa

Advertiser Staff

A 27-year-old woman was killed and man, 61, critically injured early today in a head-on collision on Kaukonahua Road, about a mile south of Farrington Highway near Thomson Corner.

Police vehicular homicide Sgt. Duke Zoller said the 4:45 a.m. head-on crash involved a 2002 Mazda four-door sedan, driven by the woman — who was identified by the Honolulu medical examiner's office as Winona Tuupoina —  and the man's 1991 Chevy van.

According to police, the car was traveling south on Kaukonahua when it drifted off the roadway and struck a guardrail before coming back onto the road and into the lane of the northbound van. Tuupoina was dead at the scene.

The driver of the van was taken to The Queen's Medical Center.

The death is O'ahu's 71st traffic fatality of the year, and the fourth this year on Kaukonahua Road.
