Man dies after Tantalus Drive accident

Advertiser Staff

A 39-year-old man died today at Straub Clinic & Hospital after crashing his car on Tantalus Drive, one-quarter mile north of Kolonahe Place.

The Honolulu medical examiner's office identified him as Darren Iwane.

Police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. John Agno said the 10:58 a.m. crash involved a 1996 Honda Accord. The driver was the only person in the car, which was in the northbound right lane when it veered off the roadway, jumped an asphalt curb and crashed into an embankment.

City Emergency Medical Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said the driver may have experienced a medical problem. An autopsy will determine cause and manner of death.

Police have tentatively classified the death as O'ahu's 72nd traffic fatality, pending autopsy findings.
