1899: The first automobile is driven in Honolulu. The Advertiser wrote that E.D. Tenney was in charge of the car and drove it as though he were used to it. The drive took him along King Street and Punahou Street and the vehicle was tried at three speeds — 4 miles an hour, 8 and 14. The vehicle was under control at all times, The Advertiser reported, and did not excite undue attention from horses.

1924: The contract for construction of Aloha Tower is awarded to the National Construction company for $160,000.

1928: Myles Fukunaga, convicted of murdering George Gill Jamieson, is sentenced to death by hanging.

1930: The Advertiser reports that the Board of Supervisors has voted to name the new West Queen Street extension Dillingham Boulevard in memory of the late Ben F. Dillingham, who built the first railroad in Hawai'i.

1934: Interisland air mail service begins. Two Inter-Island Airways planes leave Honolulu at 8 a.m. on the inaugural run to the Big Island, Maui and Kaua'i.

1957: The first calls are placed over the new transpacific telephone-telegraph cable. Business, government and military leaders in five cities spoke over an 18,000-mile hookup made by linking the Atlantic, Pacific and Alaskan cables and AT&T's land lines on the Mainland. They spoke from Honolulu, San Francisco, Washington, Ketchikan and London. The rate for a transpacific call was $9 for the first three minutes of a person-to-person call to western states and $2 per minute thereafter. There was also a 10 percent federal tax on the calls.
