Union workers at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and the resort's management agreed to a new contract today.

The contract is tentative and must be approved by the union members. The two sides announced the agreement at a 10 a.m. news conference at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. They did not release terms of the agreement nor say when the union vote would take place.

Union representatives said contract talks will continue this week with the four Sheraton hotels in Waikiki, which are also negotiating a new agreement.

The Hilton agreement is good news for Hawai'i's tourism industry.

In August the unionized workers at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa and the four Sheraton hotels in Waikiki authorized a strike, which all sides said they hoped to avoid.

The union, UNITE HERE Local 5, represents about 1,600 Hilton employees and 2,500 workers at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, the Sheraton Princess Ka'iulani Hotel, the Sheraton Moana Surfrider and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
