The Oct. 8, 1903, Advertiser updated readers on the Mauna Loa eruption, which had begun two days earlier and would continue for two months.

1911: The first banquet is held at the new YMCA at Alakea and Hotel streets.

1934: The board of supervisors approves a zoning amendment allowing extension of the business area at Kalakaua and Seaside avenues to allow Consolidated Amusement Co. to build a movie theater on Kalakaua.

1970: Some 2,000 ILWU hotel workers strike eight Neighbor Island hotels.
