Advertiser Staff

LAHAINA, Maui — A motorist was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after a pedestrian was killed on Lahainaluna Road early today.

Maui police said Michael Arcangel, 26, of Kihei, was crossing the street at about 1:10 a.m. to get to a relative's home just above the old mill when he was hit by a 2006 Chrysler sedan operated by a 26-year-old Lahaina man.

Police said the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated but was later released while their investigation continues.

There have been 16 traffic fatalities on Maui this year compared with 15 a year ago.
