The Oct. 11, 1914, Advertiser reported on increased activity in Halema'uma'u over the previous week.

1909: Count Soncho Otani, peer of Japan, prince of the Buddhist church and brother and heir of Count Kojui Otani, supreme patriarch of the West Hongwanji Buddhist Church, arrives on the Mongolia. Fireworks greeted his arrival.

1911: The YMCA building at Alakea and Hotel streets is dedicated.

1917: Capt. William Matson, president and a principal owner in the Matson Navigation Co., dies in San Francisco.

1948: Most of the 1,500 workers at the Ola'a Sugar Co. plantation strike for higher wages.

1958: Aloha Airlines confirms to an Advertiser reporter that it has rejected a purchase offer from Hawaiian Airlines.

1964: The Advertiser reports on plans for the $15 million Financial Place of the Pacific downtown.

1967: The Advertiser reports that the city Historic Building Task Force is suggesting alternative proposals in an effort to save La Pietra from the bulldozer. At the time, a developer had an option to build a townhouse complex on the site. The former Dillingham home is now the site of La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls.
