Andy Irons out of contention for world title

Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i's Andy Irons dropped out of contention for the 2006 world championship of professional surfing Thursday after he was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro Mundaka.

The fourth round and quarterfinals were completed in 3-foot waves at Bakio, Spain.

Irons won his fourth round heat, but was then eliminated by California's Bobby Martinez in the quarterfinals.

Irons entered the contest ranked No. 3 on the 2006 World Championship Tour. There are two more contests remaining in 2006, but Irons is now mathematically eliminated from winning the championship. He was the world champion in 2002, '03 and '04.

Florida's Kelly Slater, who is currently No. 1, advanced to the semifinals, and could clinch his eighth world title by winning the contest.
