1909: Gov. Frear approves an extension of the Waialua branch of the O'ahu railroad, which opened up thousands more acres to pineapple cultivation.
1922: The liner City of Honolulu catches fire 670 miles off the coast of California. The ship was able to radio to nearby vessels and all 217 passengers were safely transferred to other ships before the ocean liner sank. The City of Honolulu had sailed out of Honolulu on Oct. 7.
1928: A Circuit Court jury sets the value of 97,671 square feet of Old Plantation land at $38,714. The city wanted the land, owned by Victoria Ward, as a right of way for the construction of the proposed Kapi'olani Boulevard from King and South streets to McCully street on the Ala Wai.
1963: The 15-acre Polynesian Cultural Center opens in La'ie.
2000: Seventeen sailors are killed in the bombing of the USS Cole off Yemen.
