The longest conference winning streak in NCAA women's volleyball history crashed to a halt in Las Cruces, N.M., Friday as 25th-ranked New Mexico State upset 11th-ranked Hawai'i, 22-30, 30-28, 27-30, 30-24, 15-13, in a Western Athletic Conference volleyball match.

The Rainbow Wahine (13-5, 7-1 WAC), playing without three injured starters, saw their 132-match winning streak against WAC opponents.

UH's last WAC loss came on Oct. 10, 1998, against Brigham Young.

"(It's) certainly disappointing it's over, but we knew it would end sometime," said UH coach Dave Shoji. "Every streak will end, just a matter of time. Obviously (we) did not want it to happen tonight."

UH let big leads get away at the end of the second and fourth games

The Aggies (21-1, 5-1) scored the last five points of Game 2 and outscored UH 17-4 to end Game 4, at a packed Las Cruces High School Gym.

"This is a match we gave away," said Shoji, whose team was playing its fifth match in eight days.

"Fatigue had nothing to do with it. We made way too many errors ... it was frustrating to watch that match," Shoji said.

In Game 5, the Aggies surged to a 7-2 advantage in Game 5 only to have the 'Bows score five straight.

After the sixth tie, at 11-11, NMSU scored the next three points. Two Jamie Houston kills delayed match point, but Anna Callis — New Mexico State's only new starter this season — ended the streak on the next serve.

Hawai'i played without Tara Hittle, Nickie Thomas and Jessica Keefe. Hittle and Thomas are out for the year. Keefe injured her left knee Wednesday on the final point in UH's victory over Louisiana Tech.

Hawai'i hosts Notre Dame in non-conference matches Monday and Tuesday. That will close a seven-match-in-12-day stretch for UH.
