Fasi Municipal getting new AC chillers

Advertiser Staff

Portions of the CivicCenter lawn were temporarily fenced off beginning this morning, and access to the Fasi Municipal Building will only be allowed through the mauka entry, so that a 400-foot-tall crane can safely hoist new air-conditioning chillers this weekend onto the roof of the Fasi Municipal Building at 650 South King St.

The work is expected to take three days overall, including a day each to erect and dismantle the crane. Workers began setting up of the crane this morning, the air-conditioning replacement will take place tomorrow and the crane will be dismantled on Sunday. If winds exceed 15 mph, the work will be postponed.

This is the second crane lift at the 220-foot-tall Fasi Municipal Building in two months. The work is being done to replace the building's 30-year-old air-conditioning system. In August, one of the rooftop chillers and cooling tower were replaced. This weekend's work involved replacing the second chiller and an air-cooled chiller that's used at night.

The work is part of a $7 million city project with Johnson Controls to implement energy-saving measures for the Fasi Municipal Building and Honolulu Police Department headquarters. These include the renovation of the air-conditioning systems and retrofitting interior lighting fixtures. When completed, the improvements are expected to save the City $500,000 annually in electricity costs.
