Leilehua teacher ordered to be held without bail

By Ken Kobayashi
Advertiser Staff Writer

A Leilehua High School teacher was ordered held without bail this afternoon on charges that he sold 15 ounces of crystal methamphetamine to an undercover officer for $44,500 last month and this month.

U. S. Magistrate Judge Kevin Chang granted the prosecution's request to detain Lee N. Anzai pending the outcome of his criminal case, which is believed to be the first here involving a public school teacher charged with selling ice.

Anzai would be held pending his trial, which is expected to be set at a later date.

Anzai, 29, of Mililani, a special education teacher, was arrested late Tuesday night at the parking lot of the Longs Drug Store on Pali Highway.

The arrest came after his fifth sale of ice to the undercover agent, according to prosecutors.

Anzai is charged with selling ice on five different occasions away from the school at various parking lots from Sept. 8 through Tuesday night.

He is accused of selling methamphetamine in amounts ranging from one ounce to five ounces to a deputy sheriff posing as a drug buyer.
