WHY JUST FOUR?

We wanted to profile all the aspiring designers, but could select just four — a difficult task. First we chose the youngest and the oldest. Then we picked someone whose career path steered him away from fashion before he created a single garment and another who dreams of designing, but has a bigger priority: supporting his family with a day job.

Who will be the next big name in Island fashion? That burning question (at least for devoted followers of fashion) just may be answered tomorrow when 34 emerging designers will send their models down a red carpet on Nu'uanu Avenue as Chinatown unleashes its own version of "Project Runway" — Fresh F.A.C.E. of Nuuanu.

The show is produced by popular couture designer and artist Takeo. Like Chanel, Kenzo and Halston, he goes by a single name. A designer of luxe pageant gowns for more than two decades, no one understands better than Takeo how difficult it is to make it big in the field of fashion. He also made his name producing fashion shows for organizations throughout Hawai'i, Japan and the Mainland.

"Fashion has been good to me," he said. Now he wants to give back to the community by helping discover fresh new fashion talent. "My passion is to find the next generation of designers to take over."

Last spring, Takeo sat down with Sandy Pohl, owner of the Louis Pohl Gallery, and the pair brainstormed a way to fuse fashion and art in Chinatown.

"Fashion is art to me," said Takeo, "so let's show it in Chinatown, Honolulu's art central."

They decided to create a day of arts and entertainment. The event's centerpiece would be an outdoor, Island version of Bravo's hit reality series "Project Runway."

As word spread through the Island fashion community, pencils flew across paper and fashion sketches flowed, scissors sliced into fabric, sewing machines buzzed in a surge of creativity. By the entry deadline, 34 designers had signed on for the fashion show.

In addition to the emerging designers, 10 established designers and retailers will show their latest creations: Christina von Fieandt, Bad Sushi, Eric Chandler, Takeo, Hawaiian Moon, Emine Da Huong, Jo Fraticelli, Syl Omeda Kop, Bonnie's Closet and DJ Colbert.
