The Oct. 13, 1927 Advertiser reported that a feather cape given to a naval officer in 1843 by King Kamehameha III was being given to Bishop Museum through the generosity of Walter Dillingham.

1882: King Kalakaua announces he will be crowned at 'Iolani Palace on Feb. 12, 1883.

1950: President Truman arrives at Hickam en route to a conference with Gen. Douglas MacArthur on Wake Island. He affably poses for press photos but balks at having a yellow carnation lei put around his neck.

1954: Five men are injured when the freshly poured concrete roof they are working on at the Kailua Cornet Store collapses. The state's safety engineer blames undersize jacks for the failure.

1956: The Advertiser reports that Hawaiian Dredging Co. has begun blasting coral from the bottom of Hanauma Bay to clear a 200-foot-wide channel in which to lay the first leg of the Hawai'i-West Coast underwater telephone cable.

1975: Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako end their two-day Hawai'i visit and fly home to Tokyo. The royal couple had spent two weeks in the United States. They spent one day in Honolulu and a day at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.

1980: Slack-key guitarist Gabby Pahinui dies after a stroke. He was 59. His absolute mastery of the slack-key style inspired a generation of young musicians and fans.
