Advertiser Staff

Michelle Wie rallied on the back nine for an even-par 72 Saturday in the third round of the $875,000 Samsung World Championship, an elite women's golf tournament in Palm Desert, Calif.

The Punahou School senior, who turned 17 Wednesday, is at 2-over 218 entering today's final round at the Canyons Course at the Bighorn Golf Club.

Defending champion Annika Sorenstam was 10-under through 11 holes and had built a three-shot lead at the time Wie finished her round. Sorenstam won last year's event by eight shots.

Wie birdied Nos. 12, 14 and 18 while bogeying Nos. 2, 7 and 15.

The four-day event features 20 of the top women golfers in the world, including Sorenstam, No. 1-money leader Lorena Ochoa, former rookie of the year Paula Creamer and Karrie Webb.

Wie is near the bottom for the third tournament in a row. She finished last in her previous two tournaments, both against men.
